Birthday Presents

I was browsing a customer's website one afternoon and ran across a pair of earrings that I liked.

Lo! And behold! I opened a small gift, presented to me by my wonderful husband of more years than I will admit to here, and poof! Inside the box were the earrings I had lingered over while browsing the on-line catalog.

Well, that's almost a true telling. Minus a detail.

I had sent the link to my daughter with a "pretty" comment, who in turn sent the hint on her her father....you know the story. Anyway, he cared enough to suss it out with her before shopping blindly for a birthday gift. Consequently I have a new pair of favorite earrings. And they use a finding made by my company, so even better. Thanks to Susan Davis for her wonderful collection of jewelry designs.

Art Deco Drops

The original tooling for the Art Deco style drop earring finding in this pair of earrings goes back to the 1920's, under the leadership of my grandfather, George Guyot. Not sure why they didn't make them for left and right, but it's probably because the piece was made for another use, perhaps as a zipper pull. Or maybe they would have made the other side, but  no one nibbled on the original, so the toolmakers left it as is. Regardless, they make nifty earrings. They are a little heavier than what I like to wear, but the pizazz is worth it.

Fabulous Filigree Hoops

When my daughter was in college, I would make earrings of new findings and filigrees and send them to her so she could share them with her friends. Pleasantly surprised, I opened the mail one day to find a thank you note from one of her friends for earrings like these, which she had chosen from the package. Later I had the chance to see her wearing them, and they were real eye-catchers. She looked gorgeous in them. About two inches overall. Easy to make and easy to wear.

Guitar Pick

This hammered texture has been in our line since I don't know when. Decades. It's the favorite among many, and the line as grown as new shapes and piercing operations were developed. I thought these guitar pick shaped pieces made a nice earring. They are about one inch in size. Big enough to be seen, small enough to be comfortable. I like the combination of rounded edges and overall triangular shape.

Soft Triangles

At about one and a half inches, including the ear wire, these earrings are nearly the perfect size. My hair is just above shoulder length, so a smaller earring can get lost, but the combination of size and triangular shape keeps these earrings visible. And they are lightweight, so there is no pulling on earlobes. I guess you could quote Goldilocks and say they are "just right".

Granite Texture, Delicate Open Teardrop Hoops

I saw these pieces coming through the pipeline, from idea to first production run, and couldn't wait to slip a pair of ear wires through the holes and hang them from my ears. At about 1 inch overall, here is another pair of earrings that is small enough for the workplace, yet big enough to be noticed. A bonafide jewelry designer would know how to use this as one of many components in a complex assembly, perhaps layered with other findings. I feel it in my bones, this item is going to be a hit.

Party Earrings?

I recently bought these earrings at a holiday party and jewelry sale. I love the coppery tones.  They are a nice compliment to my skin tone. And of course they have a Guyot finding in them. At about 1 3/4" they are a little to big for me to wear at work, but I think they make a great pair to wear to a party. So that's what I will do - tomorrow morning is my book group's annual holiday brunch and Yankee swap, and I will turn up wearing these festive jingly drops.
